Chargers U17/18’s Come Up Short at US Soccer Development Academy Playoffs
The U17/18’s traveled to Greensboro, NC. , as one of 32 teams nationwide to qualify for the 1st ever Academy playoffs. Eight groups of four would produce the eight teams to qualify for the National Finals in Carson, CA. In game one the Chargers proved worthy of the test as they beat the Pateadores, CA. of So Cal Division. Ben Sweat opened the scoring 24 minutes on a great overlap run from the backline. The Pateadores responded at 27 minutes, to secure a tie at half. In the 2nd half, TJ Roehn scored two goals at the 69th and 71st minutes to secure the win. On Saturday playing on the stadium field against the defending 2008 U15/16 Champion, Carmel United, IN., the boys came out flat and quickly gave the game winner at 2 minutes, a second goals four minutes into the 2nd half sealed the loss for the Chargers. On the off day, the players enjoyed a campus tour at WakeForestUniversity. The boys were hosted by two Demon Deacon Players, Corben Bone, a 1st Team All American who led the NCAA in assists in 2009 as well as a member of the 2008 NCAA National Champions, and Nick Millington, a former teammate of Korey Veeder in US Soccer residency program.
