SARASOTA, Fla. (May 28, 2010) – The U.S. Soccer Development Academy Spring Showcase is set to kick off Friday, May 28 and continue through June 1, with 234 games scheduled at the Sarasota Polo Grounds in Sarasota, Fla.
In addition to the high-level games that will take place over the course of the long Memorial Day Weekend, the Showcase will also feature the Development Academy Annual General Meeting, a large screen viewing party of the Men’s National Team’s match against Turkey and access to the latest U.S. Soccer resources.
Along with 228 Academy matches that will help determine who will be represented at Playoffs, there will be six Academy Select Team matches against individual clubs. Made up of players chosen by Development Academy Technical Advisors and youth national team coaches, Select Teams are a chance for some of the country’s best players to play with as opposed to against each other.
Newly appointed U.S. Soccer’s Youth Technical Director Claudio Reyna will be in Sarasota discussing his new role and working directly with Academy coaches and technical advisors during the weekend. He will also be the featured presenter during the technical portion of the AGM on Sunday evening.
Gatorade will once again be on hand to introduce the G Series to athletes as well as provide fluid loss testing to each team at least once during the Showcase. Gatorade will be a major part of the new Performance Centers that will be set up strategically throughout the Polo Grounds, and will also include everything from coaching resources to athletic trainers. Once per weekend, coaches from every team will have the opportunity to receive instant feedback from the technical advisors, utilizing the resources available in the Performance Centers.
On Saturday afternoon, the teams will be invited to watch the Men’s National Team face Turkey in its final game before departing for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Sponsored by AT&T, the viewing party will take place in the 2800 square foot player’s lounge on Saturday afternoon and Technical Advisors will be on hand to provide feedback during the game.
EA Sports will also have a large presence in the air-conditioned lounge, with video game consoles set up with the new 2010 FIFA World Cup games for teams to enjoy.
In addition to the current Development Academy clubs in attendance for matches, newly admitted clubs, including the Minnesota Thunder, Shattuck-St. Mary’s Academy, the Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes, will be in Sarasota for orientation, and to get a sense of what to expect when they officially join the program for the 2010-11 season.
The matches will be officiated by referees who have been handpicked by the U.S. Soccer Referee Department, and who will work alongside full-time referees Baldomero Toledo and Terry Vaughn.
Every game will be filmed by Hi Pod, and for the first time, pre-ordered DVDs of each game will be available for pickup in the player’s lounge within 24 hours. Representatives from ProZone and InterPlay will be on hand to provide coaches with assistance on both game analysis services.
The Spring Showcase is the second event of the 2009-10 Development Academy season following the Winter Showcase, which was held from Dec. 4-8 in Phoenix, Ariz. Academy Playoffs will be held at Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. from June 25-29 and Academy Finals Week will be held from July 9-18 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
